What are the theories of planetary movement in the solar system?

In Year 5, our Science topic this term is Earth and Space. This week, we have been finding out about the theories of planetary movement and how they have changed throughout History.

To begin with, 14 different pupils were given a different character to become and a script to read. The script told the story of the different theories and how they have changed.

Once they listened to the story and we discussed the theories as a class, the children created a timeline and described what people believed.

For thousands of years people believed that the Earth was the centre of the solar system and
indeed the universe. By observing the Sun during the day it seemed obvious that it was moving around
the Earth. However, these views have changed dramatically over periods of history and today we believe nothing but the heliocentric model, where the sun is at the centre of the universe and the planets orbit it.

What the pupils learnt is that ideas in science do change over time but big discoveries can often take a long time to be accepted and proven.
